16 March, 2011

The Ministerial Leadership Initiative for Global Health (MLI) is pleased to host The Aspen Institute’s Global Health Roundtable Series event, "Straight Talk: A Conversation about Tough Questions in Global Health" on March 21st. The roundtable will feature MLI collaborator Hon. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Minister of Ethiopia’s Federal Ministry of Health, the recipient of the 2011 Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Humanitarian Award. Minister Tedros will be joined at the roundtable by Amie Batson, Deputy Assistant Administrator for Global Health at USAID, and Amb. Mark Dybul, Co-director of the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law at Georgetown University and Former U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator.

The event will be available via livestream here. http://www.aspeninstitute.org/events/live

The lunchtime discussion, moderated by MLI Senior Advisor John Donnelly, will highlight the challenges of advancing progress and sustaining achievements in global health, including:

- How are today’s government budget crises affecting global health, from remote villages to the Global Fund?
- Given the concern worldwide about women's health and maternal mortality, what are the best strategies for US Government assistance?
- What can be done accelerate country ownership of health programs?
- Why are Ethiopia successes in health care the exception in the developing world, not the rule?

The event is open to the public and a buffet lunch will be served. Please RSVP by Thursday, March 17th via email to sarah.lindsay@aspeninstitute.org or by phone at 202-736-5834. This event will be held at The Aspen Institute offices located at One Dupont Circle NW, Suite 700, Washington, DC.

MLI is a four-year program that seeks to strengthen the leadership capacity of ministries of health in Ethiopia, Mali, Nepal, Senegal, and Sierra Leone to advance policy in three interrelated areas: health financing for equity, donor harmonization in health, and reproductive health. It is a collaborative effort between the Results for Development Institute, the Aspen Institute’s Global Health and Development, and the Council of Women World Leaders.
