R4D and Sweden’s Karolinska Institute, jointly hosted a symposium on the role of the private sector in health on July 11, 2009 prior to the start of the International Health Economics Association conference in Beijing, China.
The private sector accounts for nearly 60 percent of total expenditure in health in low- and middle-income countries, and over 80 percent in countries such as India, Pakistan, Guinea and the Democratic Republic of Congo. As information on the importance of the private sector in developing countries grows, there is a recognized need to increase the research base in order to promote evidence-informed policies.
Please find below the links to a presentation by R4D's Gina Lagomarsino and Stefan Nachuk of the Rockefeller Foundation. The symposium agenda and a book containing the abstracts of all the presentations can also be found below.
