R4D to lead USAID project on improving governance in Indonesia

14 February, 2012

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has awarded R4D a grant to provide technical support, capacity building, and peer learning opportunities to organizations in Southeast Asia for high-quality and high-impact accountability work.

The Building Bridges for Better Partnerships project will support Indonesian organizations that are leaders in the field of social accountability to increase the reach of their own work and lead efforts to transfer knowledge and success of the Indonesian experience to other countries in the region.

R4D will co-lead the project with local partner the Bandung Institute for Governance Studies (BIGS). BIGS and R4D will select six additional partners to work with over the three-year project to undertake expenditure tracking exercises, citizen report cards, and social audits in the health and education sectors. The goals of these individual projects will be to identify problems with spending and services in the social sectors and to increase citizens' capacity to advocate for better education and health from their governments.

In addition to the projects conducted by the civil society partners, the Building Bridges project will result in the development of tools that can be used across the region by organizations interested in replicating social accountability work in their own communities as well as an online portal for citizens and organizations to share and learn about successful accountability work in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.
