TAP Book Launch, Nov. 8: "Lives in the Balance: Improving Accountability for Public Spending in Developing Countries"

22 October, 2010

The Transparency and Accountability Program (TAP) is pleased to announce the publication of its latest book, Lives in the Balance: Improving Accountability for Public Spending in Developing Countries.

On November 8, Global Economy and Development at Brookings and R4D will host a discussion about Lives in the Balance with authors Charles Griffin, senior adviser for Europe and Central Asia at the World Bank and Courtney Tolmie, senior program officer with the Results for Development Institute. Following their presentations, a panel featuring Warren Krafchik, director of the International Budget Partnership, Joseph Asunka, former research and program officer at the Ghana Center for Democratic Development; and Jorge Quiroga, former president of Bolivia, will discuss the future steps, and the challenges to strengthening the demand for better governance in the developing world.

About TAP:
A fundamental principle of good governance is that those who hold public offices should be accountable to the public for their performance. TAP strengthens the ability of civil society organizations (CSOs) in low- and middle-income countries to promote improvements in government budgeting and expenditure processes. To date, TAP has supported 39 projects in 21 countries that have strengthened the capacity for civil society organizations to monitor and advocate for improved public spending in their own countries (for example, ensuring that the share of girls from poor households completing secondary school is similar to the share from wealthier families).
