R4D and the Engelberg Center Host Joint Workshop on Mixed Health System Stewardship

26 October, 2009

On October 26, 2009 Mark McClellan of the Engelberg Center for Health Reform and David de Ferranti of the Results for Development Institute (R4D) co-chaired a joint workshop at the Brookings Institution to examine how the US health system experience can inform mixed health system stewardship practices abroad. Representatives attended from the American Medical Association, the Institute of Medicine, the American Association of Retired People, the Churches and Health Association of Ghana, the Centre for Health and Social Services in Ghana, the Nigerian National Primary Health Care Development Agency, and many more domestic and international health system organizations.

Participants found that the US can offer valuable lessons for policy consultation and analysis, health information collection and quality monitoring. The discussion not only captured US insights, but also highlighted successful stewardship strategies that have already emerged in the developing world. For instance, the adoption of e-health in some developing countries can provide useful empirical evidence for the US. The workshop provided an opportunity for peer learning and revealed opportunities for donors, governments and other stakeholders to bolster mixed health system stewardship.
