R4D to host special session with global leaders on AIDS costs and policy choices

9 June, 2010

How much will the fight against AIDS cost in the coming years, who will pay for it in the midst of global economic crisis and competing spending priorities, and how can governments better use their scarce AIDS resources to have the greatest impact on the epidemic?

On Monday, June 14th, R4D and the Global Health Council will bring together leaders from African governments and donor agencies to discuss these major challenges in financing the global HIV/AIDS response.

This session will be moderated by David de Ferranti, founder and President of Results for Development.

  • Dr. David Apuuli, Director General, Uganda AIDS Commission
  • Dr. Benson Chirwa, Director General, National AIDS Council, Zambia
  • Prof. Rifat Atun, Director for Strategy, Performance and Evaluation Cluster, Global Fund
  • Paul Bouey, Deputy Global AIDS Coordinator, Office of the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator

To frame the discussion, R4D Managing Director Robert Hecht will provide an overview of the main findings and policy recommendations of the aids2031 report, “Costs and Choices,” which will be launched at the GHC event.

The session will take place from 2pm to 3:30pm on June 14, 2010 in the Palladium Ballroom of the Omni Shoreham Hotel and is open to all GHC conference participants.
