Obstacles to New Vaccine Adoption in LMICs

Lack of assistance has already led some Lower Middle Income Countries (LMICs) to fall behind in requiring children to be vaccinated from vaccine-preventable diseases. This study analyzes the challenges LMICs face as they consider the adoption of new vaccines and identifies practical interventions to address issues uncovered.

In 2008, both the World Health Organization’s (WHO) World Health Assembly and the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization noted that little had been documented concerning the obstacles faced by Lower-middle-income countries (LMICs) in adopting new vaccines. LMICs receive little external support for their vaccination programs, despite a birth cohort of nearly 80 million and the burden of disease from vaccine-preventable diseases.  The GAVI Alliance (Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization) assists 41 low-income countries (LIC), as well as some (31) coun

R4D Helps Shape Global Fund Strategy

At its twenty-third Board meeting in May 2011, the Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria adopted two high-impact policy measures developed in close conjunction with Results for Development Institute (R4D). These included a market dynamics strategy and a package of new eligibility policies.

Review of The Global Fund's Eligibility Criteria

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria faces a difficult challenge as it works to adopt policies that will result in the optimal use of its financial resources in coming years. R4D is helping to analyze, review, and improve The Global Fund's country eligibility criteria.

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria, which has approved grants for more than US$ 21.7 billion for 600 programs in 150 countries, faces a difficult challenge today as it works to adopt policies that will result in the optimal use of its financial resources in the coming years.

Millions of people in low-and middle-income countries rely on the Global Fund for support, with their governments and NGOs looking to the Fund as a major source of financing for HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria treatment and prevention programs.
