Kira Thorien joined the Results for Development team in May 2009. As a data specialist she works across numerous projects, among them the review of the GAVI Alliance eligibility criterion, the assessment of the private health sector in Ghana, the aids2031 initiative and the new lower middle income country (LMIC) vaccine adoption study. A veteran of several political campaigns prior to coming on at R4D, Kira holds a B.A. in Economics from Oberlin College in Cleveland, Ohio.

On Monday, the New York Times featured findings from the aids2031 Costs and Financing Project, directed by R4D, in a pair of front page articles examining the global response to HIV/AIDS.

Key national stakeholders gathered in Accra, Ghana December 14th-16th for a three-day Engagement Workshop focusing on the role of private health care providers and ways in which they can contribute more to improving the health of all Ghanaians, especially the poor.

The workshop, coordinated by the R4D assessment team led by Stephanie Sealy and Marty Makinen, brought together leaders from across the country to present data, identify gaps, and begin formulating recommendations for policy changes.

As part of the Board's request to study and revise its existing eligibility criteria, certain countries currently receiving GAVI aid are expected to become ineligible. For this reason, proper and fair graduation procedures need to be established to ensure a smooth and sustainable transition to self-financing.
