Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH)

Water, Sanitation & Hygiene

R4D's Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH) program, one of R4D’s newest initiatives, was founded on the belief that the best WASH innovations come from the community level, not outside technocrats. Our goal is to understand the barriers facing communities in accessing WASH services, connect local innovators to each other for peer learning, and leverage learning opportunities to help them increase their reach.

R4D has been working in WASH since 2014, when it began to assess the sanitation market in urban India. Since April 2015, R4D has been working to better understand the needs of WASH innovators in East Africa and India, and what factors accelerate or impede new idea uptake through the WASH Impact Network. As part of this project, our team has been conducting research into how innovative WASH ideas spread, and also what barriers WASH entrepreneurs face in taking new ideas back to implement in their respective organizations and programs. This focus on understanding “knowledge transmission belts” builds on other research at R4D into practitioner learning in international development.
